TEOU, TBOU, TRKI (Certificates of Russian as a foreign language)

TEOU Certificate of Russian as a foreign language elementary level 1
The first elementary level exam proves your basic knowledge of Russian grammar and your ability to communicate in basic situations of everyday life.

TBOU Certificate of Russian as a foreign language elementary level 2
The second elementary exam proves good knowledge of Russian grammar and your ability to communicate in simple social and cultural situations.


A series of four exams to prove your level of Russian follow on from these :

TRKI – 1 Certificate of Russian as a foreign language intermediate level 1
Starting out with no knowledge of Russian, you will need 24 weeks of group classes and one or two preparatory modules for the TRKI exam in order to sit the exam.

TRKI – 2 Certificate of Russian as a foreign language intermediate level 2
In order to go from level TRKI-1 to level TRKI-2, you need to expect 400 lessons or 20 weeks in a group class. One or two preparatory modules for the TRKI exam are required to sit this exam.

TRKI – 3 Certificate of Russian as a foreign language advanced level 1

TRKI – 4 Certificate of Russian as a foreign language advanced level 2

In addition to these official exams, most universitites propose a whole series of exams destined to respond to the specific needs of each student. In this way, there is a Russian language exam for professionals, a Russian language test for students who wish to enter a higher-level institution in Russia, and a Russian business language test.

The exams are generally organised to take place three times a year: in September, January and June.

Enrolment must take place 8 weeks prior to the start of the exams if you live outside of Russia, and 4 weeks if you are living in Russia.
