HSK

HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test)

The HSK is a standard and centralised exam of Chinese as a foreign language. It takes place in China and in all of the counterpart exam centres around the world. A "certificate of level of Chinese" is issued, mentioning the level depending on the type of exam chosen and the grade obtained in it. In this way, you will be able to situate yourself on a percentage scale according to your grade. Choose the HSK exam if :
  • You are studying Chinese (Mandarin) and wish to continue with the learning of the language and measure your language level in an objective way
  • You are not a mother-tongue Chinese speaker and your objective is to live, study or work in China


The different levels of the HSK :

Elementary
Intermediate
Advanced


What does the HSK exam consist of ?

HSK elementary
This exam is concerned with a total of 150 questions distributed as follows:
50 listening comprehension (35 min.)
40 grammatical structure (40 min.)
50 reading comprehension (60 min.)

HSK intermediate
This exam is concerned with a total of 170 questions distributed as follows:
50 listening comprehension (35 min.)
30 grammatical structure (20 min.)
50 reading comprehension (60 min.)
40 cloze test (30 min.)

HSK advanced
This exam includes two parts:
The first part is concerned with a total of 120 questions distributed as follows:
40 listening comprehension (25 min.)
40 reading comprehension (40 min.)
40 general expression (40 min.)
The second part includes:
- a written composition [400 to 600 characters] (30 min.)
- an oral production of 10 minutes (with recording)


Required level:
  • In order to sit the HSK elementary, the first Chinese (Mandarin) exam, students need to have a command of a minimuum of 600 Chinese characters as well as the corresponding grammar.
  • Students of Chinese who have taken 100 to 800 hours of classes of contemporary Chinese and master 400-3000 everyday words (lthe everyday words for the 甲Jia and 乙Yi classes) and corresponding knowledge of grammar ( 甲Jia and 乙Yi classes ) can enrol for the HSK elementary exams
  • Students of Chinese who have taken 400 to 2000 hours of classes of contemporary Chinese and master 2000 to 5000 everyday words (the everyday words required for the 甲Jia, 乙Yi and 丙Bing classes) and corresponding knowledge of grammar (required for the 甲Jia, 乙Yi and 丙Bing classes ) can enrol for the HSK intermediate exams
  • Students of Chinese who master 5000 to 8000 everyday words (required for the 甲Jia, 乙Yi, 丙Bing and 丁Ding classes) and knowledge of grammar at a corresponding level (甲Jia, 乙Yi, 丙Bing and 丁Ding classes) can enrol for the HSK advanced exams
  • Candidates holding a "Certificate of level of Chinese 3rd class" (class A of HSK elementary or class C of HSK advanced) or a higher level, can enrol for professional HSK exams (Business, Tourism, Secretarial).
